Does the Guilt Go Away?

Posted January 17, 2012 by John

I suffer from Bipolar I and I am coming to grips with all the bad things that I have done and the regrets that come with it. The feelings of inadequacy, feelings of being a loser and a bad person all around. I guess the real reason is that I’m really scared of what people think of me for all the blunders, the mismanagement of money, the way I’ve treated people in the past with my drinking and abusive nature before the medications. I guess what I’m trying to say is does this feeling go away from all the guilt for acting like a total jackass.

  1. Only if you you’re able to let it go away. In NAMI, we learn that guilt is part of the emotional stages we all go through when dealing with bipolar disorder — whether we’re the person with bipolar or a loved one. We all feel it at some point and sometimes are able to move past it over time. It’s also natural, once you get past the guilt to return to it in the future.

Sometimes just knowing that everyone goes through it makes it feel a little better.

  2. You need to call your local Social Security office, make an apeopntmint, and go in person to talk to them. They will guide you through the process of filing. Social Security will pull your medical records, and you may have to be evaluated by a SS doctor. SS bases their decision on whether they believe you can engage in gainful employment or not. I’m bipolar and on disability, but I have a lot of other physical health problems too. It can be very hard to get disability benefits, which is why so many people end up getting an attorney to help them. Was this answer helpful?
